What is Period Underwear
Period underwear is a washable, reusable and eco-friendly period protection product. It’s made by multi layer, reach absorbs blood and leak poof function without pad or tampon. Quick absorption, refresh and leakpoof protect bring you safe, comfy and confident during your period.
Does Period Underwear Work?
Period underwear is becoming an effective alternative to traditional products like pads or tampons. These undergarments are designed to look and feel like regular underwear, but they are made with special fabrics that can absorb menstrual blood and prevent leaks. For anyone who menstruates, period underwear offers a new kind of protection that is both practical and comfortable.
There are many styles of period panties available today, including bikini cuts, boy shorts, and high-waisted options. This means you can find a pair that matches your personal style and gives you the comfort you need during your cycle. Just like with other period products, choosing the right pair depends on your flow. Some period underwear is designed for light to medium flow, while others are made for heavy or super absorbency.
Beneath that, the absorbent layer soaks up blood and holds it safely inside the underwear. Polyester (PES) fabrics, known for their high absorbency, have been shown to possess an absorption capacity of 816% in distilled water2. This exceptional absorbency is attributed to the fabric’s macroporous structure, which allows water to be embedded within it. Such properties make PES fabrics suitable for applications requiring significant moisture retention.
Finally, the leak-proof layer sits at the bottom of the gusset and acts as a thin, breathable barrier that prevents any liquid from leaking through. This layer is often made from thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) or polyurethane laminate (PUL), which are both lightweight materials that effectively block moisture while still allowing air to pass through. TPU, in particular, is commonly chosen in high-quality period underwear for its ability to provide leak protection without adding bulk. Together with the absorbent and moisture-wicking layers above, this structure offers complete protection and all-day comfort—no pads or tampons required.
How It Works
As explained above, the structure of period underwear makes it a highly cost-effective hygiene product. Its main purpose is to keep women dry and protected during their period by using a specially designed gusset area. When a woman is on her period, this part of the underwear quickly absorbs the menstrual flow to keep the surface dry. The absorbent layer is built to lock in different amounts of blood, depending on the level of absorbency needed—light, medium, heavy, or super. At the same time, the waterproof layer underneath serves as a safety barrier, making sure no liquid leaks through.
This smart and layered system allows period underwear for women to offer both comfort and protection.

Why Use Period Panties?
Besides replacing pads and tampons, period underwear is becoming more popular for its good value and convenience. Many women find period panties easier to use, more comfortable, and cheaper over time since they can be washed and reused. At the same time, a exploratory study3 showed that using fewer single-use products like pads helps reduce waste. This matches the eco-friendly lifestyle many people want today, making period underwear for women a smart and responsible choice.
Convenience. True
Since periods are sometimes hard to predict, wearing a pair of period panties can help you feel prepared and protected, especially on days when you’re unsure if your cycle will start. They’re also great for teens who are new to menstruation, and for people with disabilities who may find tampons or pads harder to use.
Cost Savings. True
Unlike pads and tampons that must be replaced every time, period underwear is washable and reusable. This means you can spend less money over time. Even better, many period panties are eligible for Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), which may allow you to get reimbursed for your purchase.
Good for Special Occasions. True
Many women wear period panties during activities like sports, fitness, dancing, or even while attending swimwear parties. They offer reliable protection without the bulk of pads or the discomfort of tampons.
Better for the Environment. True
Since you can reuse them for many months, they create less waste than single-use products. For those looking to reduce their impact on the planet, switching to period panties is a simple but powerful step.
Who Should Use Period Underwear?
Anyone with a period can use period underwear, but it’s important to know what to expect, especially if you’re not used to free bleeding. Period panties don’t stop your flow—they absorb it. So when wearing them, you may feel the blood leaving your body, which can be uncomfortable at first for some people. Some women choose to wear period underwear for women together with other products like tampons or menstrual cups, especially on heavy flow days. Others prefer to use period underwear alone. Most brands offer different absorbency levels, so you can pick the right one based on your needs.
In addition to period care, many postpartum women also rely on period underwear for light bladder leakage. A cross-sectional study has shown that approximately 21.9% of women experience urinary incontinence during the postpartum period, with stress incontinence being the most common type (62.9%) (Suar et al., 2023)4. This condition often results from weakened pelvic floor muscles, hormonal changes, or the physical strain of childbirth. Period underwear offers both absorbency and comfort, making it a practical solution for women seeking extra protection and peace of mind during recovery.
Besides postpartum incontinence, there are other common reasons why people experience bladder leaks. These include aging, weak pelvic muscles, childbirth, nerve problems, or general urinary health issues. In these situations, many individuals choose to wear period underwear to stay protected. Period underwear for women and others offers gentle absorbency, helps keep the skin dry, and lowers the risk of irritation or rashes. By using period panties, people can feel more confident and continue with their daily routines—like walking outside, working, or spending time with friends—without the stress of possible leaks.
Can You Wear Period Underwear Without a Pad?
You don’t need to wear a pad with period underwear, but some people choose to, especially on heavier days. Most period panties are absorbent enough to be worn on their own, as long as they’re changed in time based on your flow. However, there are times when using a pad together with period underwear may feel more comfortable and practical.
| Period Underwear | Tampons | Menstrual Cups | Pads | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reusable? | ||||
| Usage? | External | Internal | Internal | External |
| Multiple Absorbencies? | ||||
| When to change? | 5-8 hours | 5-8 hours | 5-8 hours | 5-8 hours |
For example, on heavy flow days, some women feel more secure adding an extra layer—such as a disposable pad, reusable pad, or even a menstrual cup. This extra protection can be helpful if you’re at work, in long meetings, or simply don’t want to worry about changing your underwear too often. For people with very heavy periods or conditions like endometriosis, using both can reduce anxiety about leaks and give more confidence throughout the day.
Overnight, pairing a pad with period panties is also a smart choice. If you often wake up to stains or feel uncomfortable during your period at night, this combination offers added protection. The pad handles the initial flow, while the period underwear for women acts as a backup in case of overflow. This helps you sleep more peacefully and avoid unwanted messes in the morning.
In short, while you don’t have to wear anything else with period underwear, combining products can be helpful depending on your body, lifestyle, and comfort preferences.
Is Period Underwear Sanitary?
Yes, period underwear for plus size can last for a long time—as long as you wash and care for it properly. You can hand-wash it or use a washing machine on a gentle or delicate cycle. Washing it the right way helps protect the fabric and extend its life.
To clean plus size period panties, it’s best to wash them by themselves. Avoid mixing them with other clothes, towels, or socks. Use a mild, unscented, and dye-free detergent. Do not use fabric softeners or dryer sheets, especially if they are scented, as they can damage the absorbent layers or irritate your skin.
After washing, make sure there’s no soap left in the fabric. Run an extra rinse cycle if needed to remove any leftover detergent. When it comes to drying, air-drying is the best option. Avoid putting them in the dryer, as high heat can reduce the underwear’s absorbency and shorten its lifespan.
With proper care, most period underwear for women can last between two to five years, depending on the brand and how often they are worn and washed.
Is Period Underwear PFAS Free?
In recent years, awareness around PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), often dubbed “forever chemicals,” has risen sharply. These synthetic chemicals are used for their water- and stain-resistant properties but are nearly impossible to break down in the environment or the human body. As a result, they’ve been linked to various health concerns, including hormonal disruption, infertility, cancer, and immune system impairments.
As legislation catches up—California, Minnesota, New York, and several EU countries have introduced bans or restrictions on PFAS in textiles—consumers are increasingly demanding transparency. Choosing PFAS-free products is no longer just a preference; it’s a health-conscious necessity.
With this growing concern, Many brands and manufacturer (including Period Factory) has taken a clear stance: no PFAS in any of their period underwear.
PFAS Risks
You may wonder why PFAS are important in period underwear. PFAS are chemicals that can stay in your body for years. Some brands use PFAS to make underwear resist water. But these chemicals can harm your health. Lab tests found 6:2 FTOH and 8:2 FTOH in many period underwear. 8:2 FTOH can turn into PFOA, which is not safe.
| PFAS Compound | Detection Rate |
|---|---|
| 6:2 FTOH | Found often |
| 8:2 FTOH | Found often |
| 8:2 FTOH | Can change into PFOA |
You should try to stay away from these chemicals. Always see if a brand shows lab test results for PFAS.
Safety Certifications
Certifications help you know if period underwear is safe. Look for these labels when you shop:
| Certification Name | Description |
|---|---|
| OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 | Checks for bad chemicals and makes sure textiles are safe to use. |
| Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) | Proves organic fibers and checks for good and safe production. |
| UL PFAS-FREE certification | Shows there are no PFAS in the fabric. |
Each certification checks for something special. OEKO-TEX looks for harmful chemicals. GOTS checks for organic fibers and less chemicals. UL PFAS-FREE means no PFAS in the product. Some brands also use GRS and BSCI. GRS checks for recycled content. BSCI looks at fair work and safe jobs.
| Certification | Chemical Safety Requirements |
|---|---|
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Makes sure textiles do not have bad chemicals, which is important for period underwear. |
| GOTS | Needs at least 70% organic fibers and less bad chemicals, good for organic cotton underwear. |
| GRS | Checks for recycled content and tracks it, which matters for recycled period underwear. |
| BSCI | Looks at fair work and safe jobs, which helps keep products safe and fair. |
Material Transparency
You want to know what is in your period underwear. Safe brands list all materials and show certifications. Common safe materials are cotton, modal, bamboo viscose, and recycled nylon. These often have OEKO-TEX or GOTS certification. Some brands use polyurethane laminate (PUL) for leakproof layers. You should check if the brand explains where materials come from and how they test for chemicals.
Materials | Certifications |
|---|---|
Cotton, Polyurethane Laminate (PUL), Spandex | OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 |
Cotton/modal blend fabric | OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 |
Polyester, Rayon, Recycled Nylon, Elastane | B Corp |
Certified Organic Cotton, Spandex Jersey, Polyester, Polyester PUL | OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100, GOTS, UL PFAS-FREE certified |
GOTS-certified Organic Cotton, TPU, Nylon, Elastane | N/A |
Bamboo Viscose, Cotton, Modal, Seaweed Fiber, Nylon, Elastane | B Corp, PETA-Approved Vegan |
Some brands follow rules and share what is in their products. They also post outside test results for chemicals like PFAS. You should pick brands that give clear information about their materials and testing.

Ending Period Poverty
We were proud to join a menstrual health project called “Develop With Dignity” in Uganda. This project solved the problems that keep girls aged 10–16 out of school due to period poverty. We learned that 36% of them didn’t have tampons and panties, and school absences added up to about 441,000 days because of their period time.

Challenging Period Poverty
From 2015 to 2017 in Uganda’s Kumi District—Over 50% aged 12–16 girls drop out before graduation due to period poverty—We donated washable sanitary-towel kits, period panties, and shared period-health education to 4,000 pupils. A survey showed a 45% rise in attendance of school due to this activity. As sponsors, we never regard period as a disease but as a natural, empowering milestone. We continue to supply period items to girls and women in developing countries—Women period should never be a barrier.
